Bell Rings True
The Padres’ Heath Bell has converted 40 consecutive saves, a streak that goes back to May 29, 2010. Bell’s streak of save conversions is the fifth-longest of all time.
Bell is tied with Dennis Eckersley and Trevor Hoffman who also had 40 consecutive saves. He is within one save of Rod Beck’s 41 straight. Brad Lidge had 47 consecutive saves in 2008 and 2009. Tom “Flash” Gordon had 54 consecutive saves with the Red Sox fin 1998 and 1999.
In one of the leagues that I play in, it uses net stolen bases; meaning, stolen bases minus caught stealings. I have long thought that saves should be handled the same way–saves minus blown saves. If that category were used in your league, Heath Bell is the guy you would want.
