Sure, he’s toiling in AAA with the Round Rock Express. And there’s no question he’s had some trouble staying in games lately. But, after Nats phenom Stephen Strasburg, there may not be a better MiLB pitching prospect for the rest of the 2010 season than Rojo Johnson.
Rojo’s got a great chance of jumping to the Bigs sometime between now and the rest of the season as the Astros will likely be out of contention by the All-Star break. Round Rock is the AAA-affiliate of the Houston Astros, and Johnson had a storied career in Venezuelan baseball before serving jail time for running a smuggling ring in the 1990s.
Now, after serving his time, he’s back on the mound making noise. With his unpredictable plate command and penchant for drinking beer on the mound, he could easily find himself in the closer position for the Astros if/when he gets called up to the Show.
More information is bound to surface in the coming weeks about Rojo. But for now, similar to the way many fantasy owners and handling Stephen Strasburg, we believe it’s pretty safe to go to your league’s waiver wire and save a spot for Rojo.
