Fantasy Baseball Catcher Rankings

Joe Mauer fantasy baseball rankings

Injuries rattled the catcher position in 2008, but some new names rose in the season’s rankings, bringing a dose of power and high batting average to the position that hasn’t been seen outside of the top five hitters in recent years.

Two months into 2009, Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins has produced a surprising amount of power numbers to go with his dependable batting average. Heading into action on June 9, Mauer was batting .413 with 12 homeruns, 33 runs scored and 35 RBI.

That said, the no. 1 rated catcher in most fantasy baseball formats through early June is Victor Martinez of the Cleveland Indians. Martinez is famous in fantasy baseball for his ability to provide power and run production at the catcher position, and the first part of 2009 was no different – through June 9, V-Mart was hitting .344 with 10 homeruns, 37 runs scored, and 41 knocked in.

Heading into this season, the power numbers at catcher were thought to belong to guys like Brian McCann, V-Mart, and Geovany Soto.

However, Mauer’s combination of power and incredible batting average through the first two months of the year lead us to place him once again at the top of the catcher rankings heading into mid-season fantasy baseball drafts.

Players like Brandon Inge of the Detroit Tigers and Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants are making names for themselves at the catcher position this season also because they have been producing at the plate and they possess multi-position eligibility. In the second half of the season, look forward to the return of Ryan Doumit and the continued development of Orioles savior Matt Wieters.
