Fantasy Baseball Dugout’s Player of the Month awards are given to the top statistical hitter and pitcher in fantasy baseball during a calendar month when Major League Baseball is in competition.
A standard 5×5 league is used for scoring (runs scored, homeruns, RBI, steals, batting average for hitters; wins, saves, strikeouts, ERA, and WHIP for pitchers).
FBD’s May Players of the Month are:
Hitter of the Month: Lance Berkman, First Baseman/Outfielder, Houston Astros. Berkman won Player of the Week for Fantasy Baseball Week Four, finished the month of April as the game’s third overall player, and is currently the no. 1 player in all of fantasy baseball.
On the year, Berkman is tied for the Major League lead in homeruns (17) and has scored 12 more runs (57) than any other player in the league. Only Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers (58) and Carlos Quentin of the Chicago White Sox (48) have more RBIs than the Puma (47). Ian Kinsler is the only player in the top three of the power categories with more steals (15) than Berkman (10). Of hitters with more than 100 at-bats, only Chipper Jones (.420) has a better batting average than Berkman (.384).
Pitcher of the Month: Scott Kazmir, Tampa Bay Rays. Kazmir came off the DL May 4 and was lights out on the mound all month. In six May starts, Kazmir went 5-1 with a 1.22 ERA, 38 strikeouts, and a 0.95 WHIP in 37 innings of work.
After missing the entire month of April with a left elbow strain, Kazmir is currently the no. 8 overall pitcher in fantasy baseball. In only one start did he give up more than one earned run – his season debut at Boston where he gave up four, three earned. He set a Rays record for wins in a month, and is already the team’s career leader in wins and strikeouts.
